About the job
Commure is building the AI Operating System for healthcare, transforming administrative burdens with an AI-native platform. The company's latest funding round and industry recognition highlight its significant impact. This role focuses on developing a next-generation ambient AI platform for healthcare, designed to capture, understand, and structure clinical conversations, allowing clinicians to focus on patient care. The backend systems supporting this platform are complex, involving audio ingestion, real-time stream processing, AI model orchestration, and ensuring reliability and recoverability across various failure scenarios. The ideal candidate will be passionate about making complex systems dependable, considering failure modes, idempotency, and operational simplicity while ensuring the infrastructure serves the product's need for a fast, reliable, and trustworthy clinician experience.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend systems for Ambient AI products across mobile and web.
- Manage critical parts of the audio processing lifecycle, including ingestion, streaming, validation, storage, and recovery from upload issues.
- Develop and evolve inference workflows coordinating various AI capabilities like transcription, diarization, and summarization.
- Build orchestration systems for multi-stage workflows, handling scheduling, retries, idempotency, and model routing.
- Enhance the reliability and scalability of services handling compute-intensive workloads.
- Define and maintain service-level objectives for critical workflows.
- Implement strong observability across services and pipelines using logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting.
- Lead incident response and post-incident analysis, driving improvements from operational lessons.
- Identify and eliminate systemic failure patterns through better abstractions, automation, and architecture.
- Improve cloud infrastructure, deployment systems, and operational tooling.
- Design APIs and data models for safe and predictable interaction with long-running workflows.
- Build tools for inspecting, testing, replaying, evaluating, and debugging inference pipelines.
- Balance reliability, latency, quality, and cost for AI and media-processing workloads.
- Collaborate with product, AI, security, and clinical teams to productionize new capabilities.
- Mentor engineers and establish best practices for distributed systems, observability, and backend architecture.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional backend or infrastructure engineering experience.
- Experience designing, building, and operating production distributed systems.
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language.
- Experience with asynchronous processing, message queues, event-driven systems, or durable workflow execution.
- Solid understanding of distributed-systems concepts like idempotency, consistency, concurrency, backpressure, and failure isolation.
- Experience operating services in a cloud environment, including deployment, monitoring, scaling, and incident response.
- Experience designing APIs, service boundaries, and data models for complex product workflows.
- Proven track record of improving system reliability, observability, scalability, or operational efficiency.
- Strong debugging skills across application and infrastructure.
