Scale is seeking a thoughtful, multidisciplinary Associate General Counsel, Product & Privacy to act as a strategist and thought partner for business teams in creating the next-generation platform for AI development. This role will lead product and privacy legal initiatives for cutting-edge products, reporting to the Senior Director and Associate General Counsel responsible for product counsel and privacy. The ideal candidate will possess a technology background, privacy expertise, and fluency in AI, intellectual property, and consumer protection law, with a proven ability to provide strategic legal guidance that balances business goals with regulatory compliance, risk management, and customer trust. This position requires strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Identify and manage legal risks in product development, including privacy, regulatory, licensing, and intellectual property.
- Develop and mature product and privacy legal functions, focusing on operationalizing and scaling legal support.
- Partner with technical and non-technical teams (Product, Engineering, Operations, Security) on strategic initiatives involving customer data, payments, and responsible AI.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on US and global privacy laws and other relevant product laws for business partners and the Legal team.
- Build relationships with product leadership and cross-functional partners regarding regulatory matters impacting products.
- Advance the strategic vision of the General Counsel and Product and Privacy Legal team across the company.
- Develop creative legal frameworks to support new products and customer experiences in collaboration with Legal and Product stakeholders.
- Support the drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements, including data protection agreements.
- Ensure compliance with global privacy and data protection laws (e.g., CCPA, GDPR) and emerging AI requirements.
- Embed privacy into Scale's products and processes by design and implement best-in-class privacy and compliance measures.
Requirements
- 8+ years of legal experience, with a focus on emerging technologies, privacy, and data protection counseling.
- Expertise in US and global privacy regulations.
- Familiarity and experience with launching products and advising on legal/regulatory aspects of technology product development.
- Ability to translate legal advice into actionable guidance for Product, Engineering, and Operations teams.
- Strategic thinking ability, balancing high-level strategy with detailed problem-solving to develop business-forward solutions.
- Skill in calibrating risk, distinguishing business from legal risk, and communicating it clearly to business and technical audiences.
- A proactive, collaborative, and low-ego approach to tackling projects.
- Deep interest in artificial intelligence, generative AI, and machine learning technology and applications.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in a state bar in good standing.
