About the job

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to focus on data querying and access control. This role is critical as it sits at the intersection of data retrieval and security, ensuring that every data read in Asana is both accurate and fast. You will be instrumental in maintaining these guarantees as our largest customers expand their data domains, develop more complex permission structures, and as AI agents become a significant new type of user accessing our systems. The Query and Access Control team is responsible for the query execution path over the Work Graph and its governing permissioning model. As a staff engineer, you will tackle our most challenging technical problems, driving initiatives that span multiple teams and influencing design decisions for years to come. You will collaborate closely with other core infrastructure teams to uphold customer trust in Asana as their platform for critical workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a query layer over the Work Graph that remains correct and performant as customer data and permission structures grow.
  • Evolve the access control model to ensure permission checks are sound, auditable, and fast on every read.
  • Define authorization mechanisms for new caller types, including AI agents, without compromising existing guarantees.
  • Lead large, multi-quarter projects across team boundaries, from design through deployment and iteration.
  • Build consensus on designs with engineers and leaders from other teams before implementation.
  • Share knowledge through design reviews, code reviews, and mentorship.
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to define how user data in the Work Graph is accessed.
  • Support framework and product engineers in building new product functionality at scale.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience building and operating reliable backend services at scale.
  • 3+ years of experience driving large-scale projects.
  • Proven ability to lead large technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or organizations from design to adoption.
  • Demonstrated ability to delve deep into complex problems and carry designs from first principles to production.
  • Experience sharing technical knowledge with other engineers and mentoring them in building production-quality infrastructure.
  • Skilled in communicating technical concepts and constraints to cross-functional product partners.
  • A rigorous approach to systems where correctness is paramount, with the ability to reason about the impact of changes before deployment.

Benefits

  • Mental health, wellness & fitness benefits
  • Career coaching & support
  • Inclusive family building benefits
  • Long-term savings or retirement plans
  • In-office culinary options
