AI Agent Engineer

About the job

Asana is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its AI organization in Vancouver, focusing on pioneering a new category of technology as a human-agent operating system. This role involves doubling down on Asana's AI Suite to provide customers with end-to-end intelligent orchestration. Depending on team placement, you might lead architecture for the core agentic runtime, develop high-throughput evaluation and safety infrastructure, or build sophisticated customer-facing tools for coordinating humans and AI agents. The position offers a streamlined technical interview process with a focus on matching candidates to the ideal team.

Responsibilities

  • Drive technical design, architecture, and end-to-end delivery of medium-to-large AI projects.
  • Guide and collaborate with multiple engineers on AI roadmap initiatives.
  • Design robust, extensible, and performant systems for agentic execution, prompt-driven automation, and model orchestration.
  • Ensure strict enterprise-grade data boundaries within AI systems.
  • Solve complex technical problems by balancing technical debt, developer velocity, execution risk, and business goals.
  • Anticipate customer and architectural risks, breaking down ambiguous product visions into clear engineering milestones.
  • Champion technical excellence through design documentation, retrospectives, and testing norms.
  • Mentor engineers across levels to improve engineering practices.
  • Partner with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Designers, and Data Scientists to define requirements and align technical direction.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience in designing, building, and maintaining production distributed systems, microservices, or complex full-stack architectures.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple services or codebases.
  • Practical experience or deep interest in LLMs, agentic patterns, evaluation pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or real-time streaming infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to author comprehensive technical design documents.
  • Experience evaluating trade-offs (e.g., latency, cost, determinism, maintainability) and making durable architectural decisions.
  • Track record of acting as a Tech Lead or Area of Responsibility owner, driving multi-contributor projects from ambiguity to delivery.
  • Experience navigating cross-team dependencies.
  • Passion for mentoring and coaching engineers, providing feedback, and establishing best practices.
  • Deep empathy for the end-user experience and understanding of how backend architecture affects user trust, interface latency, and workflow reliability.
  • Curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them.

Benefits

  • Equity
  • Sales incentive pay (for most sales roles)
  • Mental health, wellness & fitness benefits
  • Career coaching & support
  • Inclusive family building benefits
  • Long-term savings or retirement plans
  • In-office culinary options
