Applied Intuition is seeking a Robot Infrastructure Engineer to focus on collection tooling for their robot learning platform. This role is crucial for making high-quality robot demonstrations and human corrections easy to capture and utilize. You will be responsible for building the teleoperation workflows, quality checks, and ingestion tools that transform robot sessions into reliable training data. This is a tooling-focused position, not one that involves managing large-scale collection operations. The company values demonstrated work on real systems and practical experience over specific degrees or titles, and is open to candidates at various experience levels.
Responsibilities
- Build teleoperation and operator tools for various interfaces (leader arms, VR, etc.), including calibration, action mapping, latency, and recording.
- Implement episode workflows for task instructions, start/stop, resets, annotations, success labels, and human takeover, ensuring clear separation between policy actions and human corrections.
- Develop collection quality checks for issues like frame drops, timestamp alignment, missing signals, calibration validity, and incomplete episodes, providing immediate feedback to operators.
- Construct collection specifications and adapters to validate data from external partners against task requirements, schemas, calibration, and provenance.
- Maintain raw recordings as the source of truth and ensure normalization and export to training formats are reproducible.
- Visualize collection progress and coverage to identify and collect missing variations and challenging cases.
- Test all developed tools on real robots and document setup and troubleshooting to enable independent operation by engineers, operators, and partners.
Requirements
- Experience building data collection, teleoperation, sensor recording, or human-in-the-loop tooling validated on real robots or autonomous systems and hardware.
- Strong Python skills and software engineering fundamentals, including APIs, testing, versioned schemas, and debugging data pipelines.
- Experience with synchronized video, robot state, actions, or other multimodal time-series data.
- Working knowledge of coordinate frames, sensor calibration, data provenance, and the impact of collection errors on trained models.
- Experience building tools for others, observing their usage failures, and simplifying them without compromising data quality insights.
- Ability to translate task descriptions into executable collection workflows in collaboration with learning, hardware, and operations teams.
