About the job

Anthropic is seeking a Tax Director to lead the company's global income tax provision and US income tax compliance. This is a critical operational leadership role responsible for managing the quarterly and annual ASC 740 close, overseeing the co-sourced compliance program, and developing the necessary processes, controls, and team to support the company's growth. The role is unique due to Anthropic's significant investments in compute and data center infrastructure, as well as its active program of acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic investments. Candidates should have experience with complex M&A and infrastructure transactions, in addition to core provision and compliance skills, enabling them to handle tax purchase price allocations, technical memos for novel financing structures, and integrate these into the ASC 740 close and compliance workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the quarterly and annual worldwide income tax provision, including current and deferred computations, effective tax rate reconciliation, deferred tax asset valuation allowance assessments, stock-based compensation, uncertain tax positions, and return-to-provision adjustments.
  • Oversee tax journal entries, account reconciliations, income tax footnote disclosures, and supporting workpapers and SOX controls, while managing the financial statement audit relationship with external auditors.
  • Coordinate international tax provision components with internal teams and external advisors, and drive improvements in close speed and quality.
  • Manage the US federal and state income tax compliance program, including returns, estimated payments, extensions, elections, disclosures, and the compliance calendar, in collaboration with co-sourced providers.
  • Own cash tax forecasting and support tax authority notices, examinations, and audit defense.
  • Drive automation and adoption of tax technology, including AI tooling, across provision and compliance processes.
  • Manage tax purchase price allocation workpapers for acquisitions, including characterization, ASC 805 opening balance sheet deferred taxes, goodwill analysis, and reconciliation to the tax basis balance sheet.
  • Analyze data center and compute infrastructure arrangements, including lease classification, sale-leasebacks, Section 467 rent schedules, build-out cost recovery, and associated financing structures.
  • Prepare and review technical memos documenting tax positions for auditors and leadership, and model the tax consequences of proposed structures for internal stakeholders.
  • Mentor and develop tax team members and contribute to building the tax function.
  • Manage external advisors for opinions, studies, and valuations, and oversee associated budgets and relationships.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience managing a corporate tax function in the multinational software and technology industry, with hands-on experience in income tax provision and compliance.
  • Proven experience running the full ASC 740 provision cycle at a multinational company, including deferred taxes, valuation allowance judgments, uncertain tax positions, footnote and disclosures, SOX controls, and auditor management.
  • Experience managing a US federal and state income tax compliance program at scale, including co-sourced arrangements.
  • Familiarity and hands-on experience with complex M&A transactions, including tax purchase price allocations, ASC 805 opening balance sheet accounting, diligence, and structuring.
  • Experience with infrastructure leases, build-outs, and associated financing arrangements is preferred.
  • Ability to write clear, well-organized technical memos and explain complex tax issues to non-tax professionals.
  • CPA required; Master's in Taxation or LLM is a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations and proactively develop documentation and positions.
  • Familiarity with data center or similar capital-intensive infrastructure transactions is preferred.
  • Experience analyzing warrants, convertible instruments, or other equity components in commercial agreements, and debt-equity analysis is preferred.
  • Pre-IPO readiness or public company reporting experience is preferred.
  • Interest in applying AI tools to tax workflows is preferred.
