About the job

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems to be safe and beneficial for users and society. The Sandboxing team is responsible for the isolation layer that enables Claude to run code, use computers, and act as an agent. This involves building systems that can start in milliseconds, withstand adversarial code, and scale to a large number of concurrent sessions, operating at the intersection of the Linux kernel, virtualization, and container ecosystems. The role requires partnering with research, product, and security teams to ensure safety and performance are balanced.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate sandboxing infrastructure for untrusted code and agent workloads at scale.
  • Improve sandbox startup time, density, and throughput using techniques like snapshot/restore and warm pools.
  • Strengthen isolation across compute, filesystem, and network, including egress controls and credential handling.
  • Investigate and resolve performance, reliability, and security issues at the kernel, hypervisor, and container runtime levels.
  • Develop monitoring, tracing, and debugging tools for sandboxes.
  • Support researchers by enabling fast, reproducible, isolated execution for reinforcement learning environments and evaluations.
  • Expose sandboxes as a dependable capability for Claude products and customers.
  • Partner with security teams for threat modeling, hardening, and responding to escape/abuse scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cloud providers on hardware and platform features.
  • Share knowledge on systems programming and Linux internals, and set technical standards.

Requirements

  • Software engineering experience in Linux systems programming, kernel development, or a similar low-level area.
  • Strong programming skills in a systems language like Rust, C, C++, or Go.
  • Working knowledge of virtualization or container isolation technologies (e.g., KVM, QEMU, Firecracker, gVisor, runc).
  • Understanding of Linux resource management (namespaces, cgroups, scheduling, memory management).
  • Experience profiling and debugging system-level performance issues.
  • Ability to work in unfamiliar codebases and deliver practical, measurable solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to building safe, reliable systems.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Benefits

  • Annual compensation range: $320,000 - $485,000 USD
