Anthropic is seeking a Safety & Security Counsel for EMEA to be the primary legal advisor for keeping Claude and Anthropic safe and secure. This role involves advising on usage policy design and enforcement, safeguards R&D, misuse detection and response, sensitive escalations, threat intelligence, security incident response, and product-related safety and security matters. You will also engage with regulatory and policy bodies concerning safety and security. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced attorney to engage in high-stakes, novel work at the intersection of responsible AI development and deployment, growing as a strategic product counsel and crisis counselor in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Partner with Safeguards policy teams on usage policies for various harm areas and their translation into detection and enforcement.
- Advise on policy enforcement frameworks, including account actions, appeals, and enforcement systems.
- Counsel on sensitive escalations and strategic responses involving governments, law enforcement, regulators, and the press.
- Advise on threat intelligence investigations, bug bounty programs, and safety/security testing.
- Support engineering, ML, and data science teams in developing new tooling and detection mechanisms, considering data governance and privacy.
- Act as the first-line legal contact for safety and security incidents, providing real-time guidance and assessing notification obligations.
- Develop crisis management playbooks, escalation protocols, and self-serve legal guidance.
- Monitor and translate AI safety and security policy and regulatory developments into practical guidance.
Requirements
- Qualified to practice law in England & Wales or a relevant jurisdiction.
- Experience advising on fast-moving, high-stakes matters like investigations, regulatory issues, crisis management, or enforcement.
- Working knowledge of trust & safety, cybersecurity, privacy, or platform regulation.
- Demonstrated legal drafting and writing skills through policies, playbooks, or guidance.
- Sufficient technical fluency to understand system architecture, data flows, and AI model behavior.
- Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder responses to time-sensitive matters and translating legal analysis into actionable steps.

- Annual compensation range: £165,000 - £200,000
