About the job

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of software engineers focused on early-stage AI capabilities within Anthropic Labs, the company's internal accelerator. This role involves creating an environment where engineers can thrive during zero-to-one development, fostering psychological safety and clear direction. The manager will partner with designers, product managers, and research teams to transform emerging AI capabilities into potential products, requiring comfort in both championing successful projects and shutting down those that are not viable. Success hinges on exceptional people leadership, facilitating rapid learning cycles, and guiding teams through the inherent uncertainties of early-stage exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coach software engineers through zero-to-one development, encouraging experimentation and learning.
  • Hire and develop versatile, entrepreneurial engineers adept at ambiguity.
  • Partner with design, product, and research leaders on direction and execution.
  • Foster a balanced environment for creative exploration and rigorous evaluation.
  • Help teams develop structured approaches for hypothesis testing, decision-making, and learning extraction.
  • Facilitate collaboration between Labs engineers and research teams.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback and support engineer growth amidst frequent project shifts.
  • Drive adoption of Labs' prototypes and learnings to inform company-wide product strategy.
  • Represent the Labs perspective and roadmap to stakeholders.
  • Maintain team stability and morale during early-stage work uncertainty.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, particularly in ambiguous or early-stage environments.
  • Strong technical background as an individual contributor prior to management.
  • Proven ability to create psychological safety and help teams navigate uncertainty.
  • Skilled in facilitating decision-making and developing team judgment.
  • Comfort with project termination and a bias toward action.
  • Experience building and retaining adaptable generalist teams.
  • Exceptional interpersonal intelligence for guiding teams through pivots.
  • Strong strategic thinking for identifying high-potential breakthroughs and productization paths.
  • Effective communication skills for conveying Labs' work and impact.
  • Comprehensive technical understanding of full-stack engineering and modern product development.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts.
  • Commitment to responsibly advancing AI capabilities.
