About the job
Anthropic's legal team is at the forefront of significant legal and regulatory challenges, including copyright issues and emerging AI regulations. As the company grows, so does the complexity of discovery and information governance. We are seeking a Discovery Operations Lead to establish and manage our discovery operations from the ground up. This role involves supporting active legal matters, enhancing information governance, and owning a crucial function within a rapidly scaling AI company. You will collaborate closely with legal counsel, external lawyers, discovery vendors, and internal teams like Security and IT to manage electronically stored information (ESI) throughout the discovery process. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and strategic thinking to create a leading discovery and information governance program.
Responsibilities
- Design and manage discovery operations across the entire EDRM lifecycle, including novel and AI-specific data types.
- Oversee the legal hold program, including custodian identification, hold issuance, tracking, and release.
- Administer the discovery technology stack, including RelativityOne, preservation tools for Slack, Google Workspace, and internal systems, and associated analytics platforms.
- Develop and document standard operating procedures and playbooks for defensible and repeatable discovery processes.
- Manage the discovery vendor program, including selection, onboarding, contracts, and performance.
- Act as the primary liaison between internal legal teams, outside counsel, vendors, and internal technical teams.
- Collaborate with Security, IT, and product engineering to support data landscape management and ensure governed retention and disposition paths for ESI sources.
- Operate the information governance program, including retention schedule execution, classification, and defensible disposition workflows.
- Develop and implement program measurement and reporting for matter status, data volumes, vendor spend, and cycle times.
- Integrate AI and automation into the EDRM lifecycle, such as generative-AI-assisted review and agentic workflow automation.
- Support active litigation, investigations, and regulatory inquiries by coordinating workstreams and managing vendor execution.
- Build internal tools to streamline discovery workflows and develop dashboards for data management trends.
Requirements
- Hands-on discovery experience across the full EDRM lifecycle, with demonstrated operational ownership in complex matters.
- Proven track record of establishing or rebuilding discovery operations functions, including defining operating models and selecting platforms/vendors.
- Working knowledge of major discovery platforms like RelativityOne, including administration, search, analytics, TAR, and AI workflows.
- Strong understanding of discovery rules, ESI preservation obligations, and proportionality, with the ability to translate these into operational workflows.
- Experience managing discovery across modern data sources such as Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Box.
