About the job

Abundant is an applied research lab focused on scaling reinforcement learning for safe and reliable agentic capabilities. As a Member of Technical Staff, Research, you will own a research agenda where research meets production, co-designing strategies with researchers from frontier AI labs. You will act as the 'PM of the model,' picking problems, designing data and reward signals, and overseeing live training runs. This role rewards a founder mentality and extreme ownership, requiring you to explore unfamiliar domains and quickly establish ground truth on challenging problems.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and execute a research agenda to find simple, generalizable ideas that advance model reasoning at scale, owning it from hypothesis through to live systems.
  • Build long-horizon agentic tasks that remain difficult for future models, with graders that assign partial credit meaningfully and resist exploitation.
  • Diagnose model failure modes by analyzing trajectories and translating insights into data or reward signal improvements.
  • Partner with advanced AI research teams on datasets and benchmarks focused on alignment, safety, and reward signal design.
  • Identify, scope, and lead long-term projects, prioritizing those most critical for scaling data towards AGI.
  • Collaborate with engineering on data pipelines, internal tooling, and deep learning implementations, fixing workflows that produce bad data.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering skills with deep Python expertise, comfortable owning systems end-to-end and debugging complex codebases.
  • Experience building evaluations, RL environments, agent harnesses, verifiers, or execution sandboxes.
  • Proven track record of shipping research into production, including post-training, distillation, and high-stakes evaluation.
  • Experience with large-scale agent systems, including orchestration frameworks, tool APIs, distributed execution, observability, and logging.
  • Ability to reach ground truth in unfamiliar domains by building and analyzing outputs.
  • Keen eye for identifying misspecified tasks, ambiguous prompts, and gameable graders.
  • Thoughtful perspective on the societal and safety impacts of deploying general-purpose AI systems.

Benefits

  • Base Salary: $250,000 - $450,000
  • Sizable performance bonus tied to project and company milestones
  • Generous early-stage equity grant
  • Health, dental, vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO
